Weathering in military modeling: what it is, what it's for, and how to get the most out of it.

If you have already read our article on the history of the T-34/76, you will know why that particular tank accumulated so much dirt, rust, and mud on the Eastern Front. This article is different: here we are not talking about the tank, we are talking about the technique. What exactly is weathering, where does the name come from, what is its purpose beyond "dirtying" a model, and how to apply it judiciously so that it adds to rather than ruins hours of work.

What is weathering (and why it's called that)

"Weathering" is an English word that literally means "the effect of the elements"—the wear and tear that sun, rain, mud, dust, and continuous use leave on any surface. In model making, the term was adopted directly from English because it was in the Anglo-Saxon world that it was systematized as a discipline in its own right, back in the 70s and 80s, by modelers like Sheperd Paine, who began to treat the aging and dirt of a vehicle as a technique with its own rules, not as an accident. Since then, and especially with the explosion of specialized brands like AK Interactive or AMMO by Mig since the 2000s, weathering has become a discipline in its own right within model making, with its own products, its own techniques, and even its own vocabulary (chipping, pinwash, filter, streaking...).

In Spanish, there isn't a translation that has naturally stuck—"envejecido" (aged) or "efecto de uso" (effect of use) come close, but no one in the hobby says that. They just say weathering.

What it's really for

Here's the part that really matters: weathering isn't about "dirtying for dirtying's sake." Anyone can throw a dark wash over the entire model and call it weathering—the problem is that this, almost always, makes the model look worse, not better. The real goal of the technique is to tell a story with just paint and pigments: where that vehicle has been, what weather it has endured, how long it has gone without maintenance, if it has been hit, if its crew has cared for it or abused it through use.

It's the difference between a correct model—a well-applied camouflage, nothing more—and a memorable model that stands on its own, even if you don't know what vehicle it is. For many people in this hobby, in fact, weathering is why they started modeling: the moment when a model stops looking like a plastic toy and starts to look like something that actually existed.

The main techniques, explained one by one

Weathering is not a single technique; it's a set of processes applied in layers, usually from more subtle to more intense:

Chipping. Simulates paint that chips off due to friction, impacts, or the passage of time, revealing the metal or primer underneath. It's done with a sponge, a fine brush, or with chipping fluid applied before the final color, which allows you to "activate" the chipping later by rubbing with a damp brush.

Pinwash and washes. A highly diluted liquid—usually enamel-based—that is applied to panel lines, rivets, and corners to create shadow and depth. Pinwash is the more precise version: it's applied only to edges with a fine brush, instead of covering the entire surface.

Filters. Very diluted layers of color spread over the entire model to mute the base tone and give it subtle chromatic variation, without completely covering the background color.

Streaking. Vertical marks that simulate dirty water, rust, or fuel running down a vertical surface. They are created with enamel-based products that, as the solvent evaporates, can be "combed" downwards with a flat brush.

Pigments and mud. Dust of various earth tones applied dry or mixed with a fixative onto the lower areas of the vehicle—wheels, tracks, undersides—to simulate accumulated dust or dried mud.

Oils (oil dot / blending). Dots of oil paint in various shades that are blended with a dry brush or one dampened with solvent to create very subtle and realistic color variations, as well as oil, grease, or fuel stains.

Splashes. Drops of mud or dirt projected in a controlled manner to break the uniformity of an already worked area—the final touch that prevents the weathering from looking "planned."

How to make the most of it without ruining the model

With this in mind, here are a few principles that make a difference:

Work in layers, not all at once. Weathering is built up—base, chipping, wash, streaking, pigments, oils—not all applied at the same time. Each layer must dry before the next.

Less is more, almost always. The most common mistake is overdoing it. A real vehicle isn't uniformly dirty: there are areas of high wear (edges, high-traffic areas, undersides) and areas that are barely touched. Look at real photos before deciding where to apply each effect.

Use real references. Period photos or photos of modern vehicles in the same environment (mud, desert, snow) tell you exactly where dirt accumulates and what color it is. Never rely on intuition if you can do research.

Everything should be correctable. Most enamel- or oil-based weathering products can be removed or softened with a brush dampened in solvent as long as you haven't sealed them with varnish. Take advantage of this: apply generously and correct afterwards, instead of being afraid of "overdoing it."

Practice on scrap pieces. Before applying a new technique directly to your project, try it on a leftover piece from the sprue or an old model. It will save you headaches.

Tools and products to get started

To work any of these techniques with confidence, you need, at a minimum, a good fine-nozzle airbrush for bases and subtle blending—I use the Gaahleri -Mobius 0.2mm, which allows a lot of control in successive layers—a set of fine brushes for washes and details, an enamel-based streaking product like AK Dark Streaking Grime, and a set of weathering oils like those from Abteilung 502 for filters and oil stains.
