Panzer IV Ausf. F1 in North Africa: history, colors, and why this version and not another

When I started this diorama, I made a mistake that any modeler will recognize: I assumed I knew which version I had in front of me before checking thoroughly. Spoiler: I didn't. Reviewing the box thoroughly —something I explain in more detail in this article on how to correctly identify your model kit— I realized that I had misidentified the exact model. I corrected it in time. F1: why the version matters The Panzer IV was Germany's most produced tank during World War II. But "Panzer IV" is just the umbrella name. What's inside those two words changes with the version, and the differences are not minor. The Ausf. F1 —the variant featured in this diorama— was equipped with the short 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24 gun. This radically differentiates it from later versions like the F2 or G, which already mounted the long L/43 or L/48 gun, designed for anti-tank combat. The short gun of the F1 fired low-velocity high-explosive ammunition, intended for infantry support, to destroy positions and light vehicles, not to penetrate heavy armor. Why does this matter for modeling? Because if you put an F1 in a combat scene against a T-34 or a Sherman, the context doesn't fit. The F1 was not a tank hunter. It was a support vehicle. And that changes the story you tell with the diorama. In North Africa, these tanks operated in the early phases of the campaign, before the Afrika Korps urgently needed more modern versions to face Allied armor from 1942 onwards. In that context, they are absolutely consistent: an early wave tank, with the wear and tear typical of operating in extreme heat, dust, and supply shortages. 1/35 Scale and diorama concept The 1/35 scale is the reference in military modeling. The availability of kits, photo-etch parts, figures, photographic references, and accessories is unmatched. For a project of this type, where historical accuracy matters, it is the correct scale. The approach was intentionally simple: to focus the spotlight on the vehicle, without overloading the scene. A diorama that allows the appreciation of the tank, its operational status, and the accumulated wear. Without a complex narrative. Just the vehicle and its context. Sometimes less is more. And in modeling, that's harder than it seems. Colors: what I used and why these and not others In North Africa, there isn't a single valid color scheme. During the campaign, German vehicles went through several stages: Gelbbraun 79 (the sand brown everyone recognizes), improvised field mixes with tropical paints, and the brutal fading effects that the African sun produced on any finish within a few weeks. For this diorama, I opted for an interpretation that reflects a vehicle in use, not freshly painted. The base color —adjusted with several layers of modulation— seeks that real chromatic exhaustion that doesn't appear in generic color guides. The weathering process has three main layers. Wear from continuous use. Controlled chipping with AMMO Liquid Chipping in areas of usual friction: engine edges, hatches, handles. Not exaggerated. Only what makes sense for a tank that has been on campaign for months. Streaks and engine dirt. I used AK Fresh Engine Oil for oil stains around the engine and streaks on the rear area. A small detail that significantly enhances the realism of the whole. Dust and sand. The visual signature of the Afrika Korps. I worked with AK Splatter Dust on the lower parts of the hull and the running gear, applied in layers and fixed with thinner so it doesn't look artificial. The trick is not to apply it uniformly—real dust accumulates irregularly, more in turbulence areas and less on vertical surfaces exposed to the wind. The base of this diorama is made of cut and painted polystyrene. It fulfills its function of placing the vehicle in a recognizable environment. But honestly —and I prefer to always be honest— it is clearly improvable. A good base elevates the entire piece. It's not a secondary accessory; it's half of the diorama. Options I would have considered with more time: a solid wood plinth, a textured resin base, or a combination of materials that would provide more visual depth. It's something I'm very mindful of for future projects. I mention it here because I think it's more useful than pretending everything went perfectly. Result and what I learned The vehicle turned out well. The overall piece is consistent with the historical context and the approach I set for myself. The base is the pending task. Document before painting. Verifying the exact version before starting would have saved time and doubts. Now I always check the box, instructions, and at least one photographic reference source before opening a paint pot. The base color is paramount. Even the most elaborate weathering cannot save a poorly chosen base coat. The time you invest in modulating the base color is always time well spent. Do you want this piece for your collection?
